Yes, but it's not right because in addition to the output capacity of the charging station, charging also depends on the battery's acceptance capacity. It depends on your charging range, whether it is from 0 to 100%, 30% -80%, 5% -30%, and so on.


The peak power of the charging station cannot cover the entire charging process. At present, the charging power promoted by car companies can only last for a short period of time in the low SOC stage. For example, looking at the 250kW charging power curve of the Tesla V3 Supercharger produced by Autohome, the charging power can only be maintained between 5-30% of the battery capacity. After reaching 50%, there is not much difference compared to V2 overcharging.


If you charge when the battery level is above 65%, there is no difference between V2 and V3, and high-power charging stations cannot reduce charging time. But if you charge when the battery is low, high-power fast charging can shorten the charging time and improve the energy replenishment efficiency.


Tesla's situation is relatively good because the overall power curve of V3 supercharging is above V2, and in any case, its charging speed will not be slower than V2. But another application of high-power fast charging is to significantly improve the charging speed at low battery levels, but at the cost of sacrificing the later stages.


It's like filling a cup, you can start with large stones, then use small stones and sand, and finally only use water, and it's a trickle of water, otherwise the water won't fill the gap and overflow. If the large stones are not placed properly at the beginning, the small stones may be blocked later, leaving many holes at the bottom. If all of these are filled with a trickle of water, the overall time may be longer.

This is a power utilization issue, rooted in the battery rather than the charging station. However, the significance of developing high-power charging stations is still significant, as the rapid energy replenishment that can be achieved at low battery levels, such as a 5-minute charging range of 120km, can still solve many urgent problems.


Where is the endpoint of DC charging?
If batteries make significant progress in the future and high rate charging is no longer a bottleneck, will the power of DC charging continue to develop indefinitely?

I don't think so. In the future, there may be DC charging piles of 300kW, 400kW, 500kW or even higher, but the charging power will never develop indefinitely. At that time, the bottleneck will be the impact of high-power charging on the power grid.


A 300kW charging station has already reached the electricity consumption of an office building, while Shanghai's current peak summer electricity consumption is 33 million kilowatts. This is equivalent to 100000 cars simultaneously undergoing fast charging at the 300kW level. At present, this scale of charging is naturally impossible, and if all electric vehicles are promoted in the future, with a population of millions, and spread nationwide, the pressure on the power grid cannot be underestimated.


For this reason, intelligent and networked charging stations are essential for development. The charging power of each charging station can be adjusted according to the load rate of various levels such as distribution stations, streets, cities, etc., to avoid impact on the power grid during off peak charging.
