Ethiopia Drives Africa’s EV Shift with Rapid Charging Network Expansion

The future of transportation in Ethiopia is electric vehicles


The Ethiopian government enacted** the first non-electric vehicle import ban** in all of Africa in January 2024, marking the acceleration of the country's transportation and energy mix transition. According to the latest plan of the Petroleum and Energy Regulatory Authority (PERA),** charging stations will be deployed at 50-120 kilometer intervals along the country's main roads**, building a charging network that covers both urban and rural areas.

Minister of Transportation and Logistics Bario Hassen said that the shift to electric vehicles will benefit the Ethiopian economy by saving a lot of foreign exchange funds spent on fuel expenses every year.
The electric vehicle market in Ethiopia shows great potential for growth, with more than 100,000 electric vehicles already in use in the country, according to the ministry. The government says they plan to increase this number to 500,000 over the next decade, replacing 95% of fuel vehicles.

Industry analysis suggests that Ethiopia's radical transition is triggering a “chain reaction of electrification in Africa” and that its policy framework may serve as a model for the East African Community (EAC). According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the electric vehicle market in sub-Saharan Africa will grow at a compound annual growth rate of more than 35%** (2025-2030).



As Ethiopia's charging infrastructure continues to improve, the penetration of electric two-wheelers and electric cars is expected to increase significantly. This trend not only provides local residents with more environmentally friendly and economical travel options, but also brings a broad market prospect for the electric charging industry.
